Come join us for an afternoon of inspiring and informative history and nostalgia. Dr Emily Fitzgerald (Historian) will give a talk that follows the roots of Lindy Hop and what sparked its beginnings through exploring the history of the times. We will also explore the idea of how to view history like a historian would. Emily will be offering up some thought-provoking questions.

Bands

ANDREW DICKESON'S “BLUE RHYTHM BAND”

Andrew Dickeson's "Blue Rhythm Band" is a band for dancers. They do what Basie did - they play 4 solid beats to the bar - and no cheating! Australian Lindy Hoppers were looking for a band leader with one foot firmly in the Savoy Ballroom, and the other setting down a rock-solid beat. Andrew had a group of musicians who wanted to play for audiences who could dig what they were doing. The Blue Rhythm Band is a swinging dance band - playing music created by jazz musicians for the ultimate jazz fans - dancers! Drawing upon the tradition of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Lunceford and others – this band is the “real deal” for swing music.

Andy Swann

“Andy Swann’s impressive CV boasts extensive experience playing with household names at home and abroad from the realms of blues, jazz, rock and pop. Over many years touring worldwide, Swann’s broad versatility as a drummer has been well established. A onetime student of the Victorian College of the Arts, Swann is also a composer who plays piano, guitar and harmonica.” RHYTHMS MAGAZINE

"Swann's music contains an authenticity only a true believer can deliver." Sydney drum media

"A startling talent." Melbourne Herald Sun

Nominated for album of the year USA independent music awards

Has collaborated and performed with Queen and toured as solo support to Norah Jones.

Swann is fairly well known around the Melbourne dance scene and we can be sure that he will make us swing out hard, shimmy, shake and groove the night away to some killer Jazz.

DJs

Julia Wharington

It’s all about the music, right? No music, no feels, no fun. When Julia started dancing she discovered quickly that the DJ had such a huge influence on her enjoyment of the night. This is what drew her to DJing. She loves that feeling of seeing the floor pumping and creating an awesome time for the dancers in the room. Julia always aims to mix it up and play a variety of styles and tempos, all depending on the time of night, mood in the room, and reaction of the crowd. Her favourites are the classics, big band and small ensemble recordings from the 30s and 40s, plus those amazing live recordings from the likes of Ellington and Basie from the mid 20th century. In the last decade, Julia has been DJing for countless Lindy, Balboa and Slow Swing events, from local dances to large events all across Australia (and a little bit overseas). Expect tunes that get everyone’s toes tapping, fingers snapping, and feet flying across the dance floor. She is super excited to play all that awesome swingin’ jazz for your dancing pleasures at MSF!

Tim Jones

Tim Jones has been DJing for dancers since 2009 (and for himself since he first figured out how to put the Electric Light Orchestra on his Dad’s turntable). He's a big fan of the badass big bands and swinging small groups from the 30s and early 40s. Melbourne based, he can be found dancing: a) in any venue with social dancing b) while waiting for the kettle to boil at work, and c) in the aisles at the supermarket. Tim also says he will buy a beer for the first five people who tell him they have read this page during MSF.

Shaz Callaghan

Shaz loves all kinds of music. She loves the kind that makes you holler, tap your feet, shimmy all over, shake what your mama gave you, or shuffle off to Buffalo. For Shaz it doesn’t get better than music and dancing, whether it’s having a boogie in the lounge room or swinging out on a packed ballroom floor in New York City. Shaz is quite a klutz and somewhat technologically challenged, however when she manages to play music people seem to have a good time. Shaz regularly plays tunes in whatever town she finds herself and has been fortunate enough to DJ at Jumptown Jam, Melbourne Swing Festival, Canberräng, 1929’s Sweet & Hot, Little Big Weekend, White Night, Hullabaloo, Swing Camp Oz and the Weekend Wiggle. She’s super happy to be DJ-ing at MSF – let’s dance!

Naomi West

Naomi loves the Blues and djing it for dancers, so naturally she was delighted to hear that there will be Blues at MSF 2019. Naomi has refined her craft by djing regularly at Melbourne’s Sunday Night Blues and at Melbourne Lindy Exchange 2018. She has been invited interstate to dj at Southern Blues (SA), SwingMania (TAS) and Brisbane Lindy Exchange (QLD).

Expect her sets to place an emphasis on strong women, meaningful lyrics and respecting the African American roots of Blues music. Naomi has been fortunate enough to travel through the home of the Blues and loves sharing the artists she met through her sets and showcasing a wide variety of Blues styles and sub genres.

Trevor Hutchison

As an enthusiastic collector of vintage jazz and blues music, Trevor is a sought after Swing DJ and has DJed at events all around Australia.

A long-time stalwart of the Perth scene, he has also featured as a guest DJ on Yehoodi Radio (USA), the Herräng Dance Camp (Sweden) and supported legendary sax blower Big Jay McNeely. Expect to hear an eclectic mix that leans into jems from the swing era, with both classics and new surprises.

Noni Healy

Noni grew up in a musical household surrounded by opera, show tunes, hymns and swing. Noni studied jazz double bass and always imagines to be in the band when she's DJing! She's proud of her vast catalogue of music, reading the floor skills and loves a good unknown version of a classic. She aims to bring joy to the dance floor.

Brodie Gilligan

Brodie is well known as an insufferable blues nerd whose passion for the music led him straight to the DJ booth back in 2013. Since then he’s become a regular fixture around the Australian blues scene, spinning MP3s across countless social nights and house parties and a countable dozen-ish exchanges. He’s currently the resident DJ at Swing Patrol’s Sunday Blues Night, and his past work includes Blues Before Sunrise, Southern Blues, Borderline Blues, and Hearken the Blues. Brodie loves the blues in all of its forms and across all of its history, mixing classic tracks with the newest releases, and he’s always ready to put down tracks you can party to and tracks with deep feels.

Brady King

Brady started DJ-ing a couple of years back. He enjoys playing for all dancers in the room, mixing tempos and styles. He clearly can't sit still and and you'll often see him standing and dancing or sitting and dancing while DJ-ing. "You can't help it, the music just makes you want to move"

Mike Healy

A lover of dance, jazz and general tomfoolery Mike Healy is very much a part of the Melbourne swing dance scene. A habitual collector of Jazz, he is one of Melbourne's most popular DJ's of Lindy Hop, Blues and Jump Blues and has been shaking cabooses since 2008.  Mike DJ's competitions, exchanges and events all over the country as well as local weekly venues.  His sets are heavy on building energy and keeping the floor filled with dancers. A very passionate DJ, Mike loves bringing the best and most inspiring music to every dance floor he is honoured to play for.  His love for both the music and dance will make him an exciting DJ that dancers will appreciate. Don't miss his set.

Tyler Holmes

Tyler is a lover of vintage music as both a dancer and a DJ, so expect some great swing era tunes to groove to.

DJ Tes

I've been DJing for the Nouméa swing scene for years. I am glad to play music people enjoy here and hope you guys will enjoy it too!
